Maple Leaf Opened Two New High Schools in
September 2009
Maple Leaf opened a new high school in Chongqing and a second high school campus in Dalian in September 2009.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Chongqing Maple Leaf International School was held on November 8, 2008. For more information see the section below entitled Chongqing MOU signing and Groundbreaking Ceremony. Construction has been completed and the new school opened. The facility is designed to accommodate approximately 2,000 high school students.
The Chongqing School provides the same ESL and Grade 10-12 BC Program as the other Maple Leaf high schools.
Construction of the second campus of the Dalian Maple Leaf International School: Jinshitan High School Campus has also been completed. The new campus is located across the street from the first site. The second campus will increase the student capacity to 4,000 high school students. The one campus is now a Boys’ Campus and the other a Girls’ Campus.
Both new high schools opened September 2009.

More than 550 Maple Leaf Students Graduate with BC High School (Dogwood) Diplomas
In June 2009, more than 550 Maple Leaf students graduated with British Columbia, Canada high school (Dogwood) diplomas. The 2009 graduates are attending more than 160 different universities around the world. In total, Maple Leaf graduates from the past 11 years have been enrolled in more than 269 universities and colleges worldwide.

Maple Leaf has now graduated 11 classes of grade 12 students, over 2,400 in total. At this year’s graduation ceremony, Chairman Jen announced an invitation to Maple Leaf alumni all over the world: Maple Leaf welcomes its alumni to return to Maple Leaf to step into teaching or administrative positions. Maple Leaf will provide great opportunities for career development and attractive compensation packages.
After fourteen years of development, Maple Leaf has become a global leader in K-12 education. Its unique educational model that blends the best of east and west in education has attracted international talent. Maple Leaf is developing rapidly. It has grown from one campus with 14 students to multiple schools with more than 6,750 students in Dalian, Tianjin, Wuhan and Chongqing. Maple Leaf alumni understand the Maple Leaf model of education and its benefits. AS alumni, you personally experienced the education and advantages from such a system, and therefore, you are well-suited to continue the Maple Leaf model. Returning to work for Maple Leaf is a win-win for both Maple Leaf and its alumni. For example, Fred Ren graduated from Maple Leaf high school in 2002 and returned to Maple Leaf after he obtained his degree from the University of Victoria, Canada. He started as Assistant to Mr. Beeke, Vice President and Superintendent of BC Programs of Maple Leaf Educational Systems. He has now been transferred to Chongqing as Counselor General. Mona Tan graduated in 2003 and returned to Maple Leaf after she obtained her degree from UBC, Canada. She has been Deputy Director of the ESL Teaching Centre at Jinshitan and now will be replacing Fred as Assistant to the new Superintendent of BC Programs, Susan Penner. Ge Qiuyang graduated in 2005 and returned to Maple Leaf after he finished his studies in Singapore. He is now one of the most popular Counselors at the Tianjin (TEDA) Maple Leaf International School. Maple Leaf alumni are the direct beneficiaries of Maple Leaf education. They can fit into the Maaple Leaf team right away and leverage Maple Leaf resources more effectively. Our alumni will become an important force to move Maple Leaf forward.

High School Construction Completed
High School students have moved into the recently-completed Wuhan High School facility in February 2009. The first phase of the high school is designed to accommodate 1,500 students. It includes a new classroom building, student dormitories, 400-metre track and teacher apartments. The facilities are both attractive and spacious.

Tianjin Maple Leaf School’s Program is BC Certified
The Tianjin (TEDA) Maple Leaf International
School passed its British Columbia Ministry of Education’s on-site
certification inspection and its program is now BC-certified. This certification is valid for the 2008-09 school year.

All Maple Leaf Schools Pass Their BC On-site Inspections
All six Maple Leaf Schools’ British Columbia Programs passed their on-site BC Ministry of Education inspections very positively in the final week of November and first week of December 2008. Schools inspected include:

60 Western Universities Attend Maple Leaf’s Student Recruitment Fair
The 4th annual Maple Leaf University/College Student Recruitment Fair was held in the gymnasium facility at Dalian Maple Leaf International School on November 22 and 23, 2008. 60 western universities and colleges sent representatives to recruit Maple Leaf’s over 550 grade 12 students graduating in June 2009 with BC high school (Dogwood) diplomas. The events included a Welcoming Banquet for university representatives on Friday evening, November 21.
Chongqing MOU Signing and Maple Leaf School Ground-breaking
BC Ministry of Education and Chongqing government officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 7 and attended the Chongqing Maple Leaf International School’s ground-breaking ceremony on November 8, 2008. Mr. Peter Owen, Assistant Deputy Minister and Mrs. Susan Penner, Executive Director, represented British Columbia, Canada at these events. The meetings in Chongqing included a meeting with Mr. Bo Xilai, former mayor of Dalian, who became governor of Liaoning province, then National Minister of Commerce and International Trade and is now a member of the Politburo.

BC Ministry of Education and Chongqing government officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 11, 2008. Mr. Peter Owen, Assistant Deputy Minister and Mrs. Susan Penner, Executive Director, represented British Columbia, Canada. Planning is proceeding for a future Maple Leaf School on Jeju Island.
British Columbia Provincial Examination Results
Maple Leaf grade 10, 11 and 12 students score well on June 2008 British Columbia examinations. These exams are marked by BC Ministry of Education appointed teacher evaluators in British Columbia. No teacher marker is aware that any exam has been written by a BC student enrolled in a BC-certified school in China, as exams are only identified by student PENs (personal education numbers).

British Columbia’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Education Visits Dalian Maple Leaf Schools
The Honourable Shirley Bond, BC Deputy Premier and Minister of Education visited Dalian, China on
June 25, 2008. She celebrated ten years of successful cooperation between British Columbia’s Ministry of
Education with Maple Leaf Educational Systems and its schools. She presented Mr. Sherman Jen, Founder and
Chair of Maple Leaf Educational Systems with a government plaque. The engraving read, “In recognition of
ten years of excellence in education in providing certified British Columbia educational programs in Maple
Leaf Schools.” The Minister also spoke at the Ground-breaking Ceremony for the Dalian Maple Leaf Institute
of Technology and second Dalian Maple Leaf International High School campus, and at the Dalian Maple Leaf
Foreign Nationals School’s graduation ceremonies.
Maple Leaf Staff and Students Donate to Earthquake Victims
On June 6, 2008, a Maple Leaf delegation of staff and students presented a gift of RMB 538,205 to earthquake
victims in Sichuan Province. This voluntary donation, received from Maple Leaf staff and students, was presented
to Ju shui Middle School, to help the School rebuild its campus and improve its learning facilities.
Maple Leaf Students Win Gold in the Dalian English Speech Contest
Maple Leaf’s three contestants in the Dalian English Speech Contest won two gold medals and one silver. Ma
Lingzhou earned gold in the elementary school division; Li Zongrui won gold in the high school competition; and Zhu
Huijing received silver in the junior high school group.
The Dalian English speech Contest attracted more than 600 contestants from approximately 70 schools in Dalian.
BC Student Teacher Practicum Placements
in Maple Leaf Schools in China
25 student teachers from Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia (Okanagan) and University of Victoria completed student practicums at Maple Leaf Schools in Dalian and Wuhan in the 2008-09 School Year. This will be repeated in the 2009-2010 school year.
Maple Leaf Graduates Offered $500,000 (CAD) or 3.5 million RMB in Scholarships by University of Alberta
The University of Alberta offered approximately $500,000 (CAD) or 3.5 million RMB in scholarships to Maple Leaf’s grade 12 graduates.
This surpasses the approximately $300,000(CAD) or 2.1 million RMB offered in the previous year.
